Pole building kits are ideal as the initial framework for horse barns. A pole building kit contains all of the parts to set up the outside of a horse shelter: wood, trusses, metal roofing and siding, blueprints, and installation materials. As long as you have the right tools, pole buildings take about a day to set up. But even once the kit is installed, your horse barn is not complete. Horse barns are essentially living quarters for animals, and your pole building needs enough features to keep your animals comfortable.
First, though, before you set up your pole building kit, find an ideal spot on your property. The building should be installed on slightly elevated land to prevent water from building up. Similarly, the sun and wind are helpful for creating the temperature inside the barn. The barn should be placed in an area that will keep it warm by the sun in winter – but not hot in the summer – and will allow the wind to cool it in warmer weather.
As soon as the full shelter is put up, consider the inside layout of the barn. All animals need to be kept in stalls, and a tack room must be added as well. Horse barns typically have central aisles, and the one inside needs to be large enough for the animals.
Once you have decided and drawn up plans for the interior design of the horse barn, think about light and ventilation. Wind, air, and natural sunlight can be used in these instances. Ventilation, in general, prevents dust, odors, germs, and stagnant air from accumulating, and for natural ventilation, add a ridge vent to your roof.
Even with natural ventilation and sunlight, some utilities may still need to be added. Pipes and drains are likely needed, and because of this, the horse barn should not be far from utility lines. Have a professional, install pipes or drains into the horse barn.
In addition to these factors, think about what a horse will need. Your animals need water and feed, the stalls need to be cleaned, and the building must comply with local zoning laws. As you plan out your horse barn, make sure each of these factors is addressed.
